On Saturday, March 12, forecasts in the Hudson Valley are calling for a wintry mix that could bring heavy, wet snow to some areas, possibly sending tree limbs flying, toppling power lines, and downing utility poles.
The utility company advised that some customers could experience service interruptions on Saturday, depending on how hard the storm hits the area.
In advance of the storm, Ryan Hawthorne, the Vice President of Electric Engineering and Operations at Central Hudson said the company is preparing for the storm by readying crews, stocking supplies and materials, communicating with community leaders, and following the company's approved storm plan.
“There is a high degree of uncertainty regarding the path of the latest winter storm and the potential impacts it could have on our region, but we are prepared to respond if outages do occur,” Hawthorne said.
“In addition to our full complement of internal and core contract professionals we have secured an additional 56 line workers and supervisors to help expedite repairs if the need arises.”
Hudson Valley residents have been instructed to keep certain safety measures in mind amid the storm, particularly during potential service interruptions:
- Never use outdoor gas or charcoal grills indoors, as they pose a fire hazard and over time can give off carbon monoxide gas;
- Beware of fallen trees and limbs, and use caution when traveling;
- Avoid the use of candles for illumination due to fire hazards;
- Follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions on the use of emergency generators, and be sure to shut off the main breaker when in use and operate the units outdoors;
- Operate cars and motor vehicles outdoors only, and never inside the garage; and
- Avoid travel along roadways as hazardous conditions may cause driving accidents, including those involving utility poles which may cause power interruptions.
